After a short break for the holidays, the LARP Screamin’ Eagles wrestlers were right back in action. They visited the monstrous Bi-State Classic in La Crosse the last weekend of December, then kicked off the New Year with a triangular meet at Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton.

Bi-State Classic

Among the larger meets in the region each year, the Bi-State features some of the top wrestlers, and teams, from Wisconsin and Minnesota. Seventy teams participated in this year’s meet and were divided into three divisions according to school size. There were 25 teams in Division I, 25 teams in Division II, and 20 teams in Division III.

Screamin’ Eagles wrestlers competed in Div. II, where they scored 122.5 points and tied for 5th place with Oconto Falls (WI). Luxemburg-Casco (WI) won the Division II meet, scoring 214.5 points. Ten LARP grapplers participated in the meet, with five wrestlers placing in their weight class. All ten LARP wrestlers won at least one match.  Among the top showings for the Screamin’ Eagles were:

Freshman Tyler Kreidermacher (106 pounds) finished 16th of 49 in his weight class. Junior Ross Herber placed 9th of the 53 wrestlers in the 120-pound weight class. Sophomore Carter Jonsgaard claimed 11th of the 58 wrestlers in the 126-pound weight class, and senior Dominic Jenkins (145 pounds) landed 11th of the 59 wrestlers in that class.

Two LARP wrestlers advanced to the meet’s final brackets. Sophomore Gable Speltz lost an 8-0 major decision in the 7th place match to Hasting’s Lynden Wilson at 132-pounds. Senior Noah Herber also advanced to the 7th place match, but at 182 pounds. Herber triumphed over Westby’s Conor Vatland, scoring a fall at 3:46.

FC/L/MC Triangular

The Screamin’ Eagles traveled to FCLMC on January 4, where they matched up in a triangular meet with their hosts, as well as the wrestlers from Grand Meadow/Leroy-Ostrander/Southland (GMLOS). The LARP wrestlers split the matches, losing to GMLOS but topping FCLMC.

Though the LARP wrestlers matched up well against GMLOS, the Bulldogs got some help; LARP forfeited matches in four weight classes, while GMLOS conceded only two. Ross Herber grabbed the first LARP victory, scoring a fall over Wes Soltau at 2:43 of their 120-pound bout. Carter Jonsgaard followed that win with one of his own, notching a fall at 4:25 of his 126-pound match with Corbin Ludemann at 126 pounds. LARP’s Gable Speltz made it three in a row, triumphing 8-6 in his 132-pound matchup with Donavon Felten.

The Bulldogs got back on track in the 138-pound match, where Jackson Hale scored a technical fall over LARP’s Caleb Mueller at 5:58. The Screamin’ Eagles’ Dominic Jenkins answered with a 6-3 decision over Daniel Smith at 145 pounds. It was all GMLOS after that:  Rece Voight came back with a 7-2 decision over Kolton Riser at 152, Christian Jacobson scored a fall at 0:47 in his 160-pound match with LARP’s Jacob Meyer, and Noah Sayles triumphed over the Screamin’ Eagles’ Jackson Koverman, scoring a fall at 0:16 of their match at 170 pounds.

The Screamin’ Eagles topped the Wolves when the schools went head-to-head. While the teams split individual victories 3-3, LARP gained an edge when their opponents forfeited matches in five weight classes.

The Wolves’ Bradon Knutson topped LARP’s Jordan Zibrowski to start things off, scoring a fall at 1:43 of the 113-pound match. Carter Jonsgaard answered with a LARP victory at 126 pounds, notching a 8-3 decision over Cale Anderson. Caden Anderson responded by scoring a 6-5 decision over the Screamin’ Eagles’ Gable Speltz at 132 pounds. Carter Hovland made it two in a row when he scored a fall at 1:22 of his 145-pound match against LARP senior Brendon Honken.

LARP’s Dominic Jenkins answered with victory at 152 pounds, scoring a fall at 4:18 in his match with the Wolves’ Caleb Kunz. Carter Weideman grabbed the final Screamin’ Eagles’ victory of the day when he recorded a fall at 4:36 of his 220-pound matchup with Michael Barrett.

The Screamin’ Eagles have a pair of away meets this week. They’ll visit Caledonia Thursday, Jan. 10, then turn their bus to the west for a meet at Plainview-Elgin Millville Saturday, Jan. 12. We’ll have results of those contests in next week’s issue.
