The Lewiston-Altura/Rushford Peterson (LARP) Screamin’ Eagles traveled to Rochester Century High School for a triangular meet on Thursday, Feb. 6 to square off against a pair of Class AAA schools. In addition to winning a dual against the host Century Panthers, the LARP wrestlers prevailed in a match against Winona-Winona Cotter. The very next day, the Screamin’ Eagles traveled to Dover-Eyota, where they narrowly lost a dual meet against the TRC rival Eagles

LARP vs. Rochester Century

While the host Panthers held a one-match lead in contested bouts (3-4), the Screamin’ Eagles got a huge boost from Century forfeits in six weight classes (113, 120, 126, 132, 138, and 170). That was enough to give LARP an easy 54-29 win over Century.  Quintin Betthauser kicked off the scoring for LARP, pinning Logan Douangdy only 1:10 into their 106-pound match. The Panthers forfeited the next five weight classes, which set things up perfectly for LARP’s Caleb Mueller, who pinned Payton Richard at 1:04 of the145-pound bout.

Century grapplers finally got on the board with a pair of wins.  Garrett Pavelko pinned Kolton Riser at 2:50 of their 152-pound match, and Owen Pharo put LARP’s Brennan Corcoran on the mat only 1:03 into the 160-pound contest. After another Panther forfeit, Jacob Meyer would score the last points of the day for LARP. Meyer made short work of Nathan Miller at 182, pinning him at 0:46 of their match. Century finished with wins in the last two bouts; Jack Buechler scored a technical fall (19-3 at 5:30) over DJ Plank at 195, and Seth Arndt pinned Jaydon Boynton at 2:29 of the heavyweight match.

LARP vs. Winona-Winona Cotter

LARP faced off against its second Class AAA and Big Nine Conference opponent of the day in Winona-Winona Cotter and emerged with a 51-27 victory. While the Screamin’ Eagles held a slight edge in forfeited matches (4-3) they also bested the Winhawks in contested battles (4-2) to claim the day.  Tyler Kreidermacher started the scoring for LARP, working hard to pin Evan Maurud at 3:48 of the 113-pound match. Carter Jonsgaard then earned a 5-3 decision over Logan Henningson at 132 pounds, And Gable Speltz pinned Brenin Speltz at 1:18 of the 138-pound match.

After a pair of forfeits, Brennan Corcoran pinned Winona’s Isaac Allred only 46 seconds into their 160-pound bout. It was all Winona after that in contested matches, however; Lance Thorn prevailed in a 3-0 decision over LARP’s Jacob Meyer at 195, and Zander Rusert pinned Jaydon Boynton at 1:53 of their heavyweight matchup.

LARP vs. Dover Eyota

While the host Eagles topped the LARP grapplers, the dual was closer than the 45-27 score indicates. LARP forfeited three weight classes (113, 182, 220), and actually held a 6-5 edge in contested matches. But a solid D-E squad managed four pins that racked up some meet-deciding points.

Bolton Thesing started the scoring for D-E when he pinned Betthauser at 3:37 of their 106-pound match. But the LARP grapplers answered in a big way, winning the next four bouts. Kreidermacher scored a 9-0 major decision over Ngou Shou Whitethorn at 120, and Jonsgaard prevailed in a 5-3 decision over Landon Lehnertz in their 126-pound match. Ross Herber earned his 100th career victory in a 8-0 major decision over Gavin Gust at 132 pounds. Gable Speltz achieved his 100th varsity win immediately after, notching a 16-6 major decision over Treyton Thesing at 138 pounds.

Maverick Whitethorn got D-E on the scoreboard with a 7-2 decision over Mueller at 145 pounds, but Riser answered by pinning Aidan Gasper at 2:49 of their 152-pound bout. D-E got a pair of wins from Tyler Shea, who pinned Corcoran at 4:35 of their 160-pound match, and Tyler Mix, who put LARP’s Colin Klug to the mat at 2:23 of the 170-pound contest. Meyer answered with a pin at 1:48 of his match with Jackson Duellman at 195, but D-E scored the meet’s last points when he pinned Boynton at 3:50 of the heavyweight bout.

The Screamin’ Eagles will compete in the Team Section Tournament at Rochester’s Mayo Civic Center on Thursday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
