Letter: City of Chatfield needs to hold down 2020 tax levy

We the undersigned individuals, after reading an article titled Chatfield COW on page 10 of the Sept. 9 edition of the Bluff Country Reader wish to express our opposition to the proposed preliminary tax levy increase of 9 percent or more for the 2020 City of Chatfield budget.

We believe this proposed increase to be very excessive.

About four years ago one of the undersigned individuals purchased a residence in our immediate neighborhood. Upon receiving a real estate tax statement the purchaser noticed that the estimated market value was several thousand dollars more than the purchase price of the residence. The purchaser decided to go to the Olmsted County Government Center and appeal the valuation. The purchaser met with two individuals, however no adjustment was made to the valuation. At the end of the meeting one of the individuals told the purchaser that the City of Chatfield has the highest real estate taxes in Olmsted County.

The latest U.S. Department of Labor report states that the United States rate of inflation for the 12-month period ending July 31, 2019, is 1.8 percent.

According to an article in The Fillmore County Journal dated Dec. 17, 2018, at a City Council meeting held on Dec. 10, the City Council unanimously approved a tax levy increase of 23.77 percent for 2019, with the main driver of the increase being the new swimming pool. There is other interesting information in the article, including comments by the council about future tax levy increases.

We believe that any tax levy increase for 2020 in excess of 2.5 percent is unacceptable. Government, whether it be federal, state, county or municipality, needs to live within its means.
