Through the first 11 games of  both Section 1A Tournaments, the basketball seedings held for boys and all but once for the girls. The girls, a week further into the playoffs, have experienced few if any surprises.

Section 1A boys

In a quarterfinal on Tuesday of this week (after the Herald went to press), No. 1 seed Spring Grove (20-4) battled No. 8 Houston (13-14) for the third time this season. In mid-December, the Lions won at home 53-37 and then at Houston in late January, extended their winning streak against the Hurricanes to 36 games with a more dominating 74-47 decision.

The Hurricanes came into Tuesday's playoff rematch off a dramatic come-from-behind first-round 55-54 win versus No. 9 Bethlehem Academy (Faribault).

The SG versus Houston winner moves on to a Saturday (March 9) 6 p.m. semi-final against either No. 4 seed Hayfield or No. 5 Blooming Prairie. The Lions defeated Hayfield in the first round of last year's section tournament.

The other half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Randolph (24-2) faced No. 7 Kingsland (17-10) while defending champion and No. 3 Rushford-Peterson (17-10) took on No. 6 Grand Meadow (19-8).

The section championship game follows on Thursday, March 14 back at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center at 6 p.m.

The two seeding upsets were not really surprises. On the road, No. 18 Lanesboro eliminated No. 15 LeRoy-Ostrander, but the Burros had defeated the Cardinals on the same floor during the regular season. The surprise might have been the 22-point margin of victory in the play-offs, compared to the previous four-point decision.

The top four seeds became the final four, but No. 4 seed Lyle/Pacelli rallied from a 13-point, second half deficit - and with a last-second shot by Abby Bollingberg - eliminated top seed Grand Meadow, 54-52.

But the Athletics had also defeated the Superlarks two weeks previous as the teams tied for the SEC West Division championship. These two late-season wins by L/P are most shocking by coming after a 60-34 mid-season thrashing on its home court at the hands of the same Superlarks.

The Athletics (23-5) resume the defense of their 2018 state championship in the 2019 section title game (Thursday, March 7) versus No. 2 section seed Goodhue, which eliminated No. 3 seed Hayfield 38-29.

L/P has won two section titles, placing fourth at state in 2015 before wining the state championship last winter.

The Goodhue girls have won six of the last 10 section crowns, adding back-to-back state championships in 2016 and 2017. That makes three straight state champs coming out of Section One.

It was a disappointing finish for the Grand Meadow girls (25-2), who had won their first 23 games, including victories over both Goodhue and Hayfield as well as L/P.

At the end of the regular season, the Superlarks were state-ranked No. 2 with Goodhue at No. 3 with Lyle/Pacelli No. 19 and Hayfield No. 20.

Both the Minneota girls (23-1) and the Minneota boys (23-2) are the top ranked teams in the latest Class A state polls.

In the Section 1AA finals on March 7, the Caledonia girls face Cotter.
