For about a month, individuals who enjoy getting together with fellow knitting and crocheting enthusiasts, have been spending time on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays at Homespun Harmony.

Harmony-area resident Marsha LeFeniere opened the new business in the former Essence of Harmony building in downtown Harmony on Dec. 1 of this past year.

“Knitting and crocheting have been hobbies of mine for many years,” LeFeniere explained. “I work full-time as a controller for a construction company in Winona. I enjoy my full-time job and plan to continue working there. But I’ve had this idea of providing some type of place for people who enjoy knitting and crocheting to gather, share their ideas and spend time together.”

LeFeniere, who has a degree in accounting, said she spent considerable time crunching the numbers and discussing her plans with the staff at Yarnology of Winona to open a shop in Harmony. She also worked with Chris Giessen of the Harmony EDA to create a three-year business plan.

“The Harmony area is a hotbed for knitters and crocheters and they had to travel to Decorah, Rochester, Winona or La Crosse to get their supplies,” LeFeniere continued. “So I decided to move forward with my plans to open up a shop in Harmony. And the response has been very positive.”

Homespun Harmony offers eight different brands and numerous sizes of yarn, as well as needles, hooks, bags, scissors, patterns, books and “inspiration galore.” LeFeniere can get individual patterns from the various books she has in her store through the different suppliers she works with.

LeFeniere noted that her new shop is intended to be a place where persons can come and enjoy the art. Some of the projects they have been working on include Afghans, sweaters, scarves and shawls. LeFeniere will be offering lessons to beginners and also those who learned the craft but need a little brushing up.

At the present time, Homespun Harmony is open Tuesday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. LeFeniere said she will expand the store hours if the demand is there. She figures when the tourist season arrives in the spring, she may expand the hours.

LeFeniere and her husband, Joseph, own the Preston Liquor Store. They have been living near Harmony for the past ten years.

“So far, it’s been very rewarding. I am very happy to be here,” she concluded.
