M-C boys denied by ninth-inning, walk-off home run

By :

The Mabel-Canton baseball team wound up losing some baseball to Mother Nature on May 1, with what was supposed to be a doubleheader at Lyle/Pacelli. The first game of the double header was suspended by a thunderstorm in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Athletics up 10-0. That game and the nightcap will be continued on May 15.

The Cougars then dropped a heart-breaking May 4, extra-inning conference game at Houston by a 6-5 score on May 4, and then lost to a hot-hitting Rushford-Peterson squad 16-1 on Monday, May 7. The Cougar baseball team left at 1-5 on the season (0-4 SEC), with a lot of baseball to play between now and the postseason.

Loss at  Houston 6-5

A walk-off home run in the bottom of the extra ninth inning by Damon Carrier gave Houston a 6-5 home win over Mabel-Canton. The winning blast went over the center field fence with one out, the only hit given up by Drew Wyffels in one and a third innings of relief.

Both starting pitchers were effective but had to be replaced after the maximum 105 pitches, each with 10 strikeouts and only one walk.

For M-C, Logan Richardson went seven innings, and Houston starter Brady Happel lasted seven and a third. Sophomore Jaden Abraham picked up the win in one and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

Wyffels had half of the M-C hits, going 4 for 5 with a triple, a double, the only M-C stolen base, and the first two Cougar runs.

Parker Ingvalson batted two for five with an RBI-triple. Caden Stoen and Dawson Wilder had the other two base hits.

Wyffels opened the game with a triple and scored on a passed ball to put M-C ahead quickly 1-0.

The first Hurricane batter also scored, and Houston would score in each of the first three innings to lead 5-1. The Cougars held Houston scoreless for the next five frames until Carrier hit the winner.

M-C scored in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to tie the score at 5-all.

Each team left runners on second and third bases in the fifth inning. Houston stranded a runner on third base in the seventh, as did the Cougars in the eighth.

The Hurricanes out-hit M-C 10 to 8. Carrier batted three for five for Houston while Jaytin Millen went two for four with an RBI-double.

Houston (2-5, 2-4 SEC) completed an SEC sweep, having previously won 19-9 at M-C.

Loss to R-P 16-1

The Trojans took the suspense out of the game by erupting quickly with four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. The game ended with the 10-run rule after five innings.

R-P (7-1) scored 16 runs on 16 hits, half of which went for extra bases - four triples and four doubles. The Trojans left only two runners on base.

M-C (1-5) scored after a Richardson single and three walks. Wyffels scored when Cody Hershberger drew a bases-loaded walk.
Wyffels continued his hitting streak, having hit safely in all six games this season. The three Cougar hits, all singles, came in three different innings, starting with a Stoen single in the first inning.

Six different Trojans had multiple hits, including Ben Ansell, who went three for three with a triple. Dawson Dahl hit three for four with five RBIs, and Carter Weidemann (two for four) banged out two doubles.
