Hannah Hill is filling a new position at Kingsland as a school-linked mental health therapist serving elementary and high school students.

Kingsland School District officials reached out to her agency, Zumbro Valley Health Center, Hill said, with the hopes of incorporating a mental health therapist into their building for their students. The district had wanted to offer on-campus services to students to make it more convenient for parents to get access to services. Although Hill will be based in the school, the operation remains independent of the school.

Hill graduated from high school in 2010, from the University of North Dakota in 2015, and from St. Cloud State University this spring.  Although this will be her first year at Kingsland, she has been in the mental health field since 2014. She said she has experience working with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder, working with families and couples in private practice, and working with adolescents with eating disorders in a residential treatment facility.

She anticipates “obtaining knowledge around education, and how the school-mental health link works,” she said.

“I feel children should learn social skills that they will utilize throughout adulthood, as well as coping skills they can use during instances of frustration,” Hill said. “Additionally, I would like to decrease the social stigma around mental health with children and adolescents.  I would like to do anything this school year that can get me in touch with families in need.  The challenges are students not wanting to attend sessions, or families giving pushback regarding therapeutic intervention, but as mentioned earlier, I would like to decrease or put an end to the social stigma around mental health.  I hope each student will reach out for help if they need it, instead of holding everything inside.”

Hill lives in Rochester and enjoys being with her family, which includes her mother, father and a dog named Bob.  She enjoys running in addition to spending time with friends and family.
