Merton Fairchild, 88, of Canton

Merton Fairchild, 88, of Canton, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

He was born on May 30, 1930, to Donald and Myrtle Fairchild.

On June 4, 1950 he married Shirley Nordheim and the couple started their family.

He was honored to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He is most remembered for his love of family, his generous spirit, “hauling Amish”, his love of gardening, especially roses, and collecting John Deere memorabilia.

He is survived by his children, Gary Fairchild (Karen), Myrna Foltz (Dale), Janet Zafft (Riley), Doug Fairchild (Barb), Marilyn Haakenstad (Lynn) and Marsha Fairchild (Dean Bergey); 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; beloved in-laws and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; sister, Donna Fairchild; grandson, Isaac Zafft; great-grandson, Grayson Troendle and special friend, Lois Moran.

A celebration of his life was held on Saturday, May 18, at the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton with the Rev. Margaret Jumonville officiating. The Canton American Legion gave military honors. Burial was held in the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Preston.

Memorials are suggested to the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church.
