Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton/Lanesboro head wrestling coach Joe Cullen said numbers are up this year, although he still has a young team with just one senior.

“We have a great bunch of kids this year that are willing to work hard to improve,” said Cullen.  “I am very excited to watch them progress throughout the season.”

Last year the team was 2-16 in dual meets and had one wrestler, Caden Anderson, qualify for the state meet.

Here are the top wrestlers returning for 2018-19, along with last year’s record and their weight class and grade: Caden Anderson (25-18, 145 lbs., sophomore, all-conference), Cale Anderson (23-9, 138 lbs., sophomore, last year’s “most valuable wrestler”), Michael Barrett (12-24, 220 lbs., junior), Caleb Kunz (10-20, 152 lbs., sophomore), Stefan Nikoloski (10-18, 285 lbs., junior) and Orion Sass (7-12, 132 lbs., eighth grade).

Key wrestler lost from last year’s squad was Eric Kunz, who had 14 falls last season.

Listed on the roster on the high school league website are five seventh graders, seven eighth graders, six ninth graders, eight sophomores, eight juniors, one senior, and two wrestlers with no grade affiliation. A total of 37 wrestlers were listed.  Be ready for a lot of preliminary matches before the varsity takes the mat!

Listed as assistants for coach Cullen are Adam Daniels, Blaise Sass and Walker Ward.  Absent from this year’s coach staff is longtime assistant Paul Snell, who is working in Decorah now.

The Wolves open the season with two tournaments, Dec. 1 at Ellsworth, Wisconsin, and Dec. 8 at the Logan Tournament in La Crosse.  First dual meets are Tuesday, Dec. 11, against Goodhue and Triton at Goodhue.

The FCLMC Holiday Tournament is Saturday, Dec. 15.
