R-P softball ends season in playoff opener

Chad Smith

The No. 5 Seed Rushford-Peterson softball team dropped its opening-round game in the East Sub-Section 1A tournament to No. 4 Seed Fillmore Central/Lanesboro by a score of 12-0. The first round of the sub-section tournament is single-elimination, which means the season is over for the Trojans. The Trojans fell to 0-3 against FC/L this season after two close losses by identical scores of 4-3 in the regular season. R-P finishes the season at 4-15.

R-P vs. FC

After dropping a couple of tight games against the Falcons in the regular season, FC/L came out swinging early and put the Trojans back on their heels. The Falcons put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning, scored two more runs in the third and four more in the fourth. The game ended by ten-run rule when R-P couldn’t mount a comeback.

The Trojan girls were scoreless with only two hits while committing two errors. FC/L scored 12 runs on eight hits and didn’t commit an error.

Peyton Hoiness was one for two at the plate, while Isabelle Olson singled in her only official at-bat of the game. They were also the only two baserunners the Trojans could come up with.

R-P ran three pitchers into the circle during the game against the Falcons. Hoiness worked the first 3 innings, allowing seven hits and eight runs (6 earned), while walking two and striking out one batter. Avalon Jacobson pitched one-third of an inning, allowed four runs (two earned) without a hit, walked four and struck out one. Isabelle Olson worked the final two-thirds of an inning and gave up one hit.

FC/L pitcher Krista Jorgenson was rough on the Trojans, pitching all five innings and giving up just two hits while striking out three batters.

Lauren Mensink led the Falcons with a double, three hits in three at-bats, drove in two runs, and scored one.

Next year

The Trojans will return most of their roster next spring. However, they do say goodbye to three solid senior players, including Megan Oian, Peyton Hoiness, and Julissa Trejo.
