Rev. Joe C. Wallace, 95, of Spring Grove

Rev. Joe C. Wallace age 95 of Spring Grove, passed away at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare in Spring Grove on July 25, 2019.

Joe was born on June 1, 1924, to Arthur and Mary (Skelton) Wallace. He had three older sisters: Fawn, Ellen and Eula, and an older brother Jack.

His father died in an accident when Joe was two years old and the family moved to a small town in southern New Jersey where his mother started teaching.

Joe had a very poor but enjoyable childhood, as it was during the Great Depression and most had little. At 18 he began serving in the Army during WWII.

He went through Europe, then to the Philippines to prepare to invade Japan. The atomic bombs stopped that, so he wound up in Japan before coming back home.

The GI Bill made college attainable, so Joe went Asbury College in Kentucky. The he went on to Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas.

After graduation he served churches in Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and on an Indian Reservation in Montana.

While in seminary he met and married Dorothy Fellows. They enjoyed the ministry together and had two children – a daughter, Glenda, and a son, James. In 1995 after they had retired, Dorothy passed away.

In time Joe met and married Mavis Brevig Hampton, whose husband died the same week as Dorothy.

They had a very enjoyable life together and both were looking forward to the wonderful life that was coming with the Lord.

A memorial visitation followed by a service was held at Roble Funeral Chapel in Spring Grove, on Sunday, July 28 starting at 1 p.m.

Pastor Norman Omodt officiated.
