Sheldon Churchill, 94, of Grand Meadow

Sheldon D. Churchill, 94, of Grand Meadow, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, with family at his side at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Saint Marys Campus in Rochester.

Sheldon Dale Churchill was born on April 29, 1924, in Spring Valley to Dale and Iva (Dornink) Churchill.

On Oct. 9, 1946, he was united in marriage to Laurene Davis and to this union six children were born.

He had a famous smile, love of life and loved laughing. You knew he was always up for any game with his friends, children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. He was always instigating a lively game of cards, croquet, softball — even pitching into his 80s, Monopoly, Farkle, volleyball and more.

He lived his life fully and was always content in his life. He was a longtime dairy farmer on a farmstead near Dexter.

He was a longtime member of St. Finbarr’s Catholic Church. Later in life, he was named Senior Citizen of the Year of Mower County in 2013 for his dedicated volunteer work including “Cards with Sheldon” at the Grand Meadow Nursing Home.

He is survived by his children, Linda (Ron) Alberts of Rochester, Irene McKenzie of Glencoe, Minn., Barb (Mike) Smith of Ankeny, Iowa, Steve (Marie) Churchill of Dexter, Mary (Tom) Bryson of Vancouver, Wash., and Sandy (Tim) Gallagher of Buffalo, Minn.; sister, Mary Ann Hennessy of La Mesa, Calif.; brother, Jack (Josie) Churchill of Grand Meadow; 26 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Laurene Churchill; brother, Bert Churchill; son-in-law, Darrell, and brother-in-law, Don Hennessy.

Funeral mass for him was held on Wednesday, April 24, at St. Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow with the Rev. Mareddy Pothireddy officiating. Burial followed at St. Finbarr Cemetery.

Hindt Funeral Home of Grand Meadow is assisting the family.
