Soccer girls rebuilding defense again

For the second straight season, restocking the defense is the major task for the Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston soccer girls. The Warriors head into this week's season opener with experience, returning 10 of last year's 15-player rotation. But most of the veterans performed on the offensive half of the field.

Five starters were lost to graduation, but that included both all-conference selections and the majority of the defense from last fall's 2-12-3 team.

A critical exception, however, is the return of goalkeeper Madeline Foster. She is one of six seniors on the 2019 roster, including Spring Grove's Katie Lamm. Look for additional senior leadership from Avery Zahn, Kaydi Breeser and Melanie Seymour.

Numbers are up with 36 girls in grades 7 through 12. Fifth-year coach Chris Jandt says success will rely on how well the rebuilt defense performs and how soon.

The girls had an alumni scrimmage on Tuesday of this week before this Saturday's (Aug. 24) season opener at home versus non-conference opponent Stewartville. The varsity match is slated for 1 p.m. after an 11 a.m. junior varsity contest.

The first road trip follows on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at Winona High.
