The Caledonia/Spring Grove girls (2-3, 2-2 TRC) split four close home softball games last week. It began with no Warrior hits in an April 23 non-conference crossover 4-1 home setback against Wabasha-Kellogg.

The next day, C/SG split a conference twin bill in Brownsville versus La Crescent-Hokah with a 7-4 loss in the first game that went 10 innings before a 12-11 victory in the nightcap. The girls came up one run short in a 3-2 conference loss to Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland on Thursday.

Freshman Julia Schmoker pitched a no-hitter for Wabasha-Kellogg, striking out 11 and walking only two in the Falcons' season opener.

Trailing 2-0, C/SG scored without a hit in the first inning, aided by two errors and a walk.

Only two other Warriors reached base in the final six innings with another error and a batter hit by a pitch.

Senior Maggie Klees batted 4 for 4, accounting for half of the Falcon hits.

After three scoreless inning for both teams, the Lancers pushed across three runs in the top of the 10th inning.

C/SG had led 3-0 after two innings but scored only once in the final eight frames.

Emma Buttell scored following her lead-off triple to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

Adrianna Reinhart batted 2 for 5 with an RBI.

The game ended with the tying run in scoring position and the potential winning run on base as a four-run Lancer rally fell just short.

The Warriors had led early 11-0 but needed a seventh-inning run to hang on for the win.

Grace Privet batted 4 for 5 with two doubles while Kerrigan Scanlan went 3 for 4. Lydia Lange was 2 for 4 with a triple as C/SG out hit the Lancers 16 to 8.

It was not that C/SG walked so many batters (six), but La Crescent (2-1) walked none and committed only two errors.

The Bulldogs (1-0) scored the winning run in the top of the third of what turned out to be a pitchers' duel.

The first two batters of the game scored to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 with two unearned runs. The second and third Warrior batters scored to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Three of the five C/SG hits came in that first frame. Only three Warriors reached base in the final  six innings.

All four GMLOK hits came in different innings.

The five C/SG hits (all singles) came from Buttell, Scanlan, Cassie Heimer, Clare Kasten and Brook Stemper.

The Warriors received little charity as GMLOK had no errors and walked only two C/SG batters.

The girls played a conference double header at Lewiston-Altura on May 1 before hosting St. Charles on Thursday, May 3.

C/SG plays at Mabel-Canton on Monday, May at 4 p.m. before a Tuesday return game at Rushford-Peterson.
