The Caledonia/Spring Grove softball girls dropped two road games to teams with winning records on either side of a home win against winless Southland. A big inning propelled St. Charles past the Warriors 10-7 on April 30 before Cal/SG used timely hitting to put away Southland 6-2 on May 2. The next day Chatfield dominated play 17-2.

The Warriors closed the week at 4-8, all in Three Rivers Conference play.

The Warriors took a quick lead when the game's first batter Claire Buttell singled and then scored when second batter Grace Privet doubled.

The Warriors out-hit the Saints 13 to 10, but the home team had three home runs and put together one big eight-run inning with a pair of three-run homers.

It would be 9-1 before the Warriors scored again with two runs in the fifth inning.

It was 10-3 when the game became suddenly competitive with a five-hit, four-run Cal/SG rally after two outs in the sixth.

"I was really proud of how the girls fought to get back into the game after being down 9-1 early," said Cal/SG coach Michelle Anderson. "St. Charles had one huge inning on offense, and we were able to get back into the game and even had runners on base towards the end of game with an opportunity to tie it up.”

The Warriors received two hits each from Privet, Buttell, Kaydi Breeser (2 for 2), Anna Mauss and Ashly Ideker.

Winning pitcher sophomore Jade Krenik struck out nine and walked only three. The Saints improved to 9-2.

The Rebels (0-9) took the quick lead with two unearned runs in the first inning, But Buttell tossed a shutout during the final six innings, striking out eight and walking five.

The Warriors went ahead 3-2 with a bases-loaded triple from Buttell in the second inning.

Cal/SG added another three runs with back-to-back doubles from Buttell and Privet after two outs in the fourth.

The Warriors out-hit Southland 8 to 5 with a 4-to-1 advantage in extra-base hits.

"We got some very timely hitting from Claire Buttell, Grace Privet, and Anna Mauss to push across the runs needed to win this game," said Anderson. "We have been doing a good job defensively recently against our opponents but will need to keep working on all aspects of the game whenever we are able to have a good outside practice."
