Softball succumbs to Cardinals, Saints, rain

A double-digit hit total was not enough at Lewiston-Altura on May Day before managing only one hit against visiting St. Charles two days later as the Caledonia/Spring Grove girls (2-5, 2-4 TRC) dropped two conference softball games last week. Rain ruled both days, postponing the second game of the double header against the Cardinals and shortening the shutout loss to the Saints.

Two six-run innings led to a 13-4 Cardinal lead after three innings. Seven different Warriors contributed to at least 10 hits, but they could not keep up.

Senior Katelyn Stemper went 3 for 3 and also reached base with a walk. A two-RBI, over-the-fence home run from Clare Kasten was the big blow. Emma Butrtell and Anna Mauss added doubles.

L-A improved to4-4, 4-2 TRC.

Junior Inga Jystad tossed a one-hitter while striking out seven and walking only one.

Olivia Welscher hit a two-out single and then stole second base in the third inning. But she would be the only Warrior on base through the first four frames.

The Saints (5-4, 4-4 TRC West) led only 1-0 until erupting for four runs in the fourth. It was ruled an official game when called by rain after five innings.

As the Herald was going to press on May 7, the girls played at Mabel-Canton before a May 8 TRC trip to Rushford-Peterson.

C/SG is at Southland on Thursday, May 10 before hosting a pair of double headers - on Friday versus Fillmore Central/Lanesboro and on Tuesday (May 15) against league-leading Cotter/Hope Lutheran.
