Softballers swing big against Schaeffer

Chad Smith

The Rushford-Peterson softball team came out swinging in a big way, picking up their first win of the season 26-0 (4 innings) at Schaeffer Academy on Monday, April 8. A late-season winter storm cost the Trojans two games last week. A road game at Caledonia on Thursday, April 11, was postponed to May 17. A Friday doubleheader on the road at Winona Cotter was moved to May 14. The R-P girls are 1-1 overall (0-1 TRC).

R-P vs. Schaeffer Academy

The R-P girls came out swinging, sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning. The Trojans scored five runs, and never looked back in a 26-0 win over Schaeffer Academy. The Trojans finished with 13 hits, and pitchers Peyton Hoiness and Avalon Jacobson combined for a three-hit shutout. The Trojans evened their season record at 1-1 with the road win in Rochester.

After the five-run outburst in the opening inning, the R-P girls took it to another level by scoring 12 runs in the second inning. The Trojans nearly batted around twice in the inning, sending 17 batters to the plate. They nearly equaled that in the third, scoring nine runs and wrapping up the scoring before the game ended in the bottom of the fourth.

The 13-hit parade for the Trojans included just two extra-base hits, both doubles by Jasmine Schueller and Julissa Trejo. Schueller was three for three with a walk, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Trejo (2 for 3) added three runs and two RBI. Avalon Jacobson (2 for 2) drew three walks, added three RBI and three runs scored.  Ellie Dahl (2 for 2) had three RBI and scored four times. Karissa Eide was 0 for 1 but still scored four times and added one RBI by drawing five walks.

The other four hits went to Hailey Jenkins, Megan Oian, Jimmi Ritter, and Rylin Hoel. The Trojans lineup had a good eye at the plate, drawing 23 walks while striking out just four times.

Hoiness threw three innings in the pitcher’s circle, giving up just two hits while striking out five batters and issuing just one walk. Jacobson pitched the final inning, giving up just one hit while striking out two batters and walking one.

Faith Matson (2) and Anna Lash (1) combined for the three Schaeffer Academy base hits.

The schedule is weather permitting. The Trojans were scheduled to be at Houston on Monday, April 15. After that, they’ll take a few days off before Chatfield on Thursday, April 25.
