Solum sinks 1,000th during rout of Trojans

While completing a traditional 3-point play, Amelia Solum hit a free throw to give Spring Grove a 49-28 lead over Rushford-Peterson with 7:30 remaining. The Jan. 16 home crowd roared its approval, and six basketball boys stripped off their shirts to reveal numerals and punctuation marks painted on their chests to form “1,000!” in celebration of the 1,000th career point scored by the all-conference senior guard.

The milestone moment came during a 10-point run that gave the Lions their greatest lead of 25 points (53-28) in an eventual 59-35win.

Solum would finish with a 24-point, 10-rebound double double along with 3 steals, a blocked shot and considerably more assists (5) than turnovers (2).

Jacine Johanningmeier hit all three of her shots from the field for 6 points while securing 8 rebounds. Jordian Leahy added 7 points and 4 boards.

With freshman Maggie Lile nursing a sore ankle, classmate Addyson McHugh stepped into the starting lineup and nailed her first three shots to outscore the Trojans by herself, 6-2, during the first few minutes. McHugh finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, a blocked shot and 2 assists with no turnovers.

The Lions had 11 assists and only 10 turnovers and hit half of their 2-point shots (23 for 46).

Both teams scored 21 points from the perimeter and seven points from the free throw line. However, the 24-point winning margin came in the free throw lane where the Lions outscored the Trojans 38 to 14.

Spring Grove took the ball inside with the dribble (13 points), the pass (13 points) and on fast breaks (12).

That success inside also resulted in more trips to the foul line, but the Lions did not take advantage - hitting only 7 of 25 free throws, a season-low 28%. R-P went 7 for 12 (58%) with charity shots

Neither team shot well from afar with the Lions hitting only 2 of 13 (15%) from 3-point land while the Trojans sank only 4 of 19 (21%).

Overall, the Grove girls shot 42% from the field, their second-best accuracy of the season (43% vs. Klawock, Alaska). R-P shot 23%, the second-worst of all Lion opponents thus far (Lanesboro 22%).

R-P freshman Kaylee Ruberg scored 8 points and rebounded 10 times.

Spring Grove never trailed and after breaking a 2-2 tie, was never caught again. It was nine-point margin (30-21) at halftime, and the Lions then bolted away by scoring the first nine points of the second half.

Both teams came in with only two wins, oddly enough against the same two teams, Klawock and Schaeffer Academy. The Trojans left at 2-12, while Spring Grove improved to 3-13.

It was the Lions' third straight win in the series that the Trojans still lead, 33 wins to 19.

Rushford-Peterson took all three preliminaries, winning the B-team game 29-17, the eighth grade contest 36-8 and the seventh grade game 21-12.

This week and next

The Jan. 17 home date with Grand Meadow was postponed due to winter weather. The SEC East fourth-place Lion girls hosted the rematch with third-place Mabel-Canton as the Herald was going to press on Monday of this week.

They head west to LeRoy-Ostrander (fifth place SEC West) on Friday, Jan. 24 and board the bus to Rochester for the rematch versus fifth-place Schaeffer Academy on Thursday, Jan. 30.
