For some reason I have in hand some telephone directories — this one from January 1952 for Grand Meadow and Racine.  You note the address: Miss Anna Neill, Route 3, Spring Valley.  The manager is V. Martinsen of Grand Meadow, and local calls will be limited to six minutes!  The front page is dominated by Stier Oil Co., distributors of Mobilgas and Mobiloil, of course, the Flying Horse with Socony-Vacuum, their usual logo.  Complete car repair service, a complete line of tires, tubes and batteries; lubrication and washing - our specialty.  Our aim is to please you.

The pages are lined with ads:  1) Hayes-Lucas Lumber Co.; lumber, coal, paints; Racine, manager Howard Lysne.  2) Alfred Edgar - Garage & Service Station: wrecker service, co-op oil-gas; batteries, tires, bulk service, Racine.  3) Glenn W. On the back cover: 1) Interstate Power Co. - better light, better sight; see your dealer for appliances.  2) M.J. Nicholson & Pat Kendall Livestock Co.: bonded buyers, Spring Valley and Grand Meadow; your local livestock market, always your best market.  3) Racine Oil Co. — Webb's cut gas prices at the following stations: Pearson's at Lanesboro; Berg's at Spring Valley; Hylands at Hylands; Larson's Washington Store; Peterson's at Racine; Montgomery tires and batteries; for bulk service, call 2251.

Also on the back page: Cash for your hogs — livestock hauling, both local and long distance; Tri-County Co-op Shipping Assn.; Lloyd Thompson, manager; licensed and bonded buyer, Racine. Dead stock: highest CASH prices for horses and cows; choice of premiums for hogs, calves, sheep; prompt service; we pay all phone charges.
