Spring Grove led for most of the first 11 minutes by as many as eight points, 15-7. But the Lions added only one field goal in the final half of the first half and only 12 more points all night in a 53-27 home loss to Waukon (Iowa) on Nov. 26.

The Indians scored the first basket but did not regain the lead until late in the first half on the way to a 26-19 halftime advantage.

For the second time in two games, Spring Grove was limited to single-digit scoring during a frigid-shooting second half.

Eventually, the older Indians won their season opener by 26 points by overcoming their own early turnovers, and with full-court defense and 24 steals, forcing the younger Lions to make many mistakes.

The Grove girls were not able to protect the ball while facing both zone and man-to-man Waukon full-court defenses. The Lions suffered through 33 turnovers while attempting only 33 shots. One third of those lost possessions came against full-court pressure.

Spring Grove - with two seniors, two sophomores, three freshmen and an eighth grader - was not able to handle a mostly senior-junior Indian lineup from a school with an enrollment roughly four times that of Spring Grove.

It was the season opener for Waukon, which was coming off a 19-4 season that ended in the Iowa Class AAA state semi-finals. However, the only returning Indian starter was not available against Spring Grove.

Indian passing was off target early while attempting to hit multiple cutters to the basket. But the passing improved, and the Indian attack became more efficient.

Overall, Waukon outshot SG 33% to 25% from the field. After no 3-point field goals in their season opener, the Lions hit more treys (4) than 2-pointers (3) in this second game. Both teams shot well from 3-point range (SG 4 for 10, Waukon 5 for 16) and shot over 60% from the free throw line (SG 9 for 14, Waukon 14 for 23).

But with nine more offensive rebounds and 17 fewer turnovers, Waukon shot much more frequently than did the home team.

With a 51-27 lead, the Indians worked on their delay game, effectively holding the ball for the final seven minutes with only one turnover while adding the final field goal.

Amelia Solum led Lion scoring with 11 points while Maggie Lile came away with a team-high 7 rebounds. Jacine Johanningmeier passed out 2 assists with no turnovers, the lone Lion with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.

Waukon junior forward Margaret Wacker rebounded well while scoring a game-high 19 points. Senior guard Hailey Regan added 11 points.

It was the third straight win for the Indians in a series they now lead 19 wins to 11.

Waukon dominated the B-teamgame 41-17. There were no junior high games.

Game time was moved up an hour due to impending winter weather, which did arrive during the game.

This week and next

Big school challenges continue when the Lions hosted Decorah on Tuesday of this week after the Herald had gone to press.

With a third straight home game, Spring Grove opens the conference campaign when defending East Division co-champion Houston visits on Thursday, Dec. 5.

SEC action continues with a Tuesday, Dec. 10 trip to Mabel-Canton and a Dec. 12 bus ride to Lanesboro.
