Welcome to Syttende Mai 2018!

Giants of the Earth Heritage Center will be a hub of activity again this year celebrating Syttende Mai. Beginning on Thursday, May 17, Giants and the Sons of Norway groups will sponsor a traditional “barnetoget” (children’s parade) to celebrate Norwegian Independence.

The parade will start promptly at 1:15 p.m. in front of the school and progress up Main Street until it reaches Viking Memorial Park.

This year, the parade will feature a Norwegian song played by a small brass band under the direction of Willy Leafblad. The kindergarten class will ride the Viking ship while each class will follow dressed in red, white and blue.

Local preschools are also invited to join in the parade lineup. At the park, the sixth grade students will perform a Maypole dance. Traditional Norwegian food will be sampled at the log cabin with the help of the Sons of Norway and the school’s youth development group.

Festivities will include a chance to learn the thousand-year-old Norwegian game called KUBB.

On Thursday night, the sixth grade academy reception will be held in the Spring Grove Cinema and in Immigrant Hall at Giants.

The public is invited to view the projects created by Spring Grove sixth graders at this time or throughout the weekend in the Giant galleries.

On Friday and Saturday, the public is invited to three programs which include: How Genetic Testing Works, A Sampling of Oral Histories created by local citizens, and Learn How to Say and Sing the Norwegian National Anthem and the Norwegian Table Prayer. The sessions begin at 10 a.m. Each session will take 30 minutes and will repeat throughout the day.
