What does the Clan think of this column?

It’s been three-and-a-half years, but I’m finally getting around to asking the other people standing on this bridge with me what they think of the role they play in Too Hick To Be Square’s ongoing existence. For the most part, they approve.

Too Hick to be Square

In April 2015, I wrote the very first article in the Too Hick To Be Square column.

Nearly three-and-a-half years later, I can look back on a long history of funny and sometimes a little outrageous (and also true) stories that I’ve shared about the Clan.

There have been jokes and serious statements and many, many references of the other 14 people in my immediate family. But what there hasn’t been, at least up until now, is any mention of what those other 14 people (my parents, eight brothers, and four sisters) actually think about all of this writing I’ve been doing.

It may come as a surprise to you that hardly any of my siblings actually read the column or have more than a vague idea of what’s going to be in it from week to week. I suppose this makes sense, given that I’m pretty much just writing about them every week, and there’s nothing I could write on that subject that they don’t already know.

But although I ask them for suggestions of what to write about and sometimes go to a sibling or parent for a little fact-checking on a story, the one thing I’ve never done is ask them what they really think about Too Hick To Be Square.

Which means it’s high time I changed that. Luckily, I have these handy-dandy reporter skills, so this past week I went around with a pen and paper and asked all my siblings and my parents: What do you think of Too Hick To Be Square?

I got a variety of responses, many of which boiled down to: “I’m fine with it,” “I don’t mind,” “I like it,” or “I don’t read it very often so I have no idea what’s going on.”

And you thought I was kidding around when I say hardly any of them read my column.

But since I’ve been writing this column for three-and-a-half years, I think just this once the rest of the Clan should say what they think of Too Hick To Be Square in their own words. Here are a few of the responses I got.

From a little sister: “It’s funny to read, as long as you’re not writing about me.”

From a brother: “I think as long as you still have an audience that’s reading and you still enjoy writing, then go ahead.”

From another sister: “I like reading it. And I think there are people who enjoy reading it who will miss it when it goes away.”

And from my mom: “I knew you were going to be really good at this.”

As a side note, I also asked everyone whether it bothered them when I wrote about them in my column. Just so you know what kind of sister I am, this is likely the first time I’ve specifically asked the entire Clan that question. Luckily, everyone said they were fine with it. Most said they didn’t mind or didn’t care or (once) that I didn’t write about them enough!

And then there was that one younger brother who’s only remark was: “It doesn’t bother me…yet.”

I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a dare to me. Game on.
