Wrestlers face tough competition at Koda Classic

“Overall, we are pleased to go 3-1 on the day in a tough dual tournament,” said Chatfield head wrestling coach Travis Bartels about the Koda Classic in Farmington last week. “The highlight of the tournament was beating Coon Rapids (ranked No. 9, AAA).”

The team got wins over St. Francis (55-19), United South Central (66-6) and Coon Rapids (36-35) and lost to host Farmington (53-24).

Kail Schott (126 lbs.), Tate Karver (138 lbs.) and Seth Goetzinger (145/152 lbs.) all went 4-0 in the Classic.

St. Francis match

The Gophers fell behind 8-0, but took the lead at 126 pounds with a Kail Schott win (major decision, 16-6).  Getting wins in the match were Cael Bartels (120, fall), Schott (126, MD 16-6), Cody Guenther (132, forfeit), Tate Karver (138, 11-6 decision), Seth Goetzinger (145, fall 4:00), Luke Ihrke (160, fall 0:53), Grady Schott (170, forfeit), Mason Clemens (195, forfeit), Isaiah Froese (220, fall, 3:11) and AJ Karver (285, fall, 1:22).

Farmington match

Chatfield was ahead 24-18 after the 152 lb. match, but lost the last six bouts.  Coming up with wins for the Gophers were Kail Schott (126, fall 2:45), Guenther (132, fall 3:17), Tate Karver (138, fall 0:51) and Goetzinger (152, fall 4:12). Farmington has received some votes in the Guillotine poll and is ranked 14th in the latest poll. 

Thad Evans wrestled Luke Peterson (ranked No. 2) at 145 lbs. and lost on a fall in 0:43.  Bartels lost 10-7 to Hunter Frost at 120 lbs.  Frost is ranked No. 6 at 113 lbs.  Luke Ihrke lost to Austin Hamel at 160 lbs. by fall in 2:00.  Hamel is the No. 5 ranked wrestler at 160 lbs. in Class AAA.  AJ Karver lost to Luke Weierke at 220 lbs. by fall in 4:00.  Weierke is the No. 8 wrestler (AAA) at 220 lbs.

United South Central match

Chatfield won six matches by forfeits: Guenther (132), Tate Karver (138), Ihrke (160), Clemens (195), AJ Karver (220) and Froese (285). Coming up with wrestling wins were Carson Rowland (106, 4-2 OT decision), Lukas Carrier (113, fall, 4:54), Bartels (120, 11-4 decision), Kail Schott (126, 4:46 fall), Goetzinger (152, 5-2 decision), Campbell Berge (170, 1:13 fall), and Grady Schott (182, 10-9 decision).

Coon Rapids match

AJ Karver got a pin-win (1:26) at 220 lbs. to secure the win for the Gophers.  With the seven-point lead after the 220 lb. match, Chatfield forfeited at 285 lbs. to Gavin Layton (ranked sixth in the state at 285 lbs.)  Also coming up with wins for Chatfield were Rowland (106, fall 1:59), Bartels (120, fall :46), Kail Schott (126, fall 2:57), Tate Karver (138, 6-2 decision), Goetzinger (145, 9-5 decision), and Berge (170, fall 3:47).  Grady Schott lost at 170 to Zach Thomas, 5-3.  Thomas is ranked No. 10 at 170 lbs.

The Gophers had some very good competition at the Farmington match.

Friday night, the Gopher grapplers travel to Dover-Eyota for a triangular with D-E and Plainview-Elgin-Millville.  Saturday, the squad is at the Cresco tournament.
