Wyffels, Richardson repeat postseason honors

A couple of veteran Mabel-Canton baseball players are among the repeat selections as the all-conference baseball selections were announced. Drew Wyffels has been named for the third season to the All-Southeast Conference Baseball Team by league coaches. For the second-straight season, Logan Richardson is a member of the All-SEC Honorable Mention squad.

Half of the First Team members are repeat selections. Ten of the 12 first team members also have eligibility remaining for the 2019 season.

Wyffels, a junior pitcher and center fielder, was one of the key players that the Cougars relied on for big hits this season. He’s a three-time honoree with another season of eligibility remaining.

Previously voted by teammates as the Cougar MVP for a second year, Wyffels led M-C in almost every offensive category. He batted .692 in nine conference games with 18 hits, six extra-base hits and six stolen bases, all while scoring eight runs and driving in seven.

He reached base in all nine SEC games, getting base hits in eight of the contests.

Pitching against SEC rivals, he struck out twice as many batters (32) as he walked (16), and he was on the mound for 19 of 53 innings in conference contests.

Richardson, a senior three-year letter winner, was a versatile player for Mabel-Canton, seeing time as a pitcher, shortstop, and third baseman. The two-time honorable mention winner was also honored by his teammates with the 2018 Hardest Worker Award.

Richardson was a hard worker on the mound as the Cougars' second-most-used pitcher in SEC games, working 15 and 2/3 innings. At the plate, he batted .238 against SEC pitchers and .265 for the season.
